Day two

You really couldn't make this up. Turned on the hotel TV this morning and the very first words we heard were 'I've been eating kangaroo all my life but I couldn't eat a possum'. Live on the National Stereotype Channel. Big news in Sydney is the Sydney-Hobart race, which started yesterday. We must have just missed it but maybe explains why the harbour was so busy. One story dominates the papers, here as at home.

In other news, while the monsoon has arrived late and parts of the country including Uluru are flooded, on the east coast it's hot - 34 degrees - and getting hotter.

After breakfast we picked up a hire car and drove over the Harbour Bridge towards the Hunter Valley

The motorway was very slow with bank holiday traffic but we found a tourist route which was much clearer and much more picturesque. We are staying at the Hermitage Lodge in Pokolbin, and this is the view from our lodge balcony.

We're Here!

Flight was good, and we were well looked after - had great seats at an emergency exit! Very friendly and helpful cabin crew, meals served on real plates with real cutlery and linen tablecloths and napkins, and choices of wines served from full sized bottles, but alas, no free pyjamas - they were reserved for the folks in front of the curtain!

Getting some shut-eye

Bumble enjoys the view!

After many movies, meals, snacks and snoozes, we arrived in Sydney - very smooth operation going through passport control and security, other airports could learn a lot. Hopped in a cab, and even at 7am, it was getting pretty warm! After checking into the hotel, and freshening up, we headed off to see some sights and try to hold back the yawns.  Breakfast in a cafe beside the Opera House - it really is a spectacular sight with the Bridge beside it.

After walking around the Opera House and harbour area for a while, we were starting to wilt in the heat, so hopped onto a boat for a relaxing (and cooler) way to see some more of Sydney.

Back in Darling harbour and the sun was getting very hot, and we were really struggling to stay awake.  So had a meal there and made our way back to the hotel to put our feet up and try to stay awake.... That didn't last for long - I saw 5pm and the next thing I knew it was midnight - doh!  Got back to sleep for a while, but I'm now writing this at 4am.  I guess it will take a couple more days to get over the jet lag...

Off to the Hunter Valley (later) in the morning for a few days, so we'll be visiting a few wineries - expect a couple of wine related posts next!
